En alguna ocasión, no recuerdo a ciencia cierta en dónde, ví la imagen de una pequeña escultura japonesa de un hombre muy alto con brazos muy cortos, que cargaba en sus hombros a un hombre de muy corta estatura pero con brazos extremadamente altos. Simbolizaba la complementariedad. De alguna manera la música y el cine se funden en un todo armonizado, en un balance preciso que crea un mensaje claro.
Tal vez ambas individualidades de los personajes de la figura que previamente comenté pueden existir de manera independiente, sin embargo juntas hacen mucho más. Si a esas nos vamos, tendríamos que pensar en el caso del cine en un complejo interrelacionado. Cuando me introduje en el tema de la música para cine lo hice con Wenders, un gran fanático que tiene por regla la creación autoral. Fue un buen arranque, sin embargo toparme con otros grandes compositores que me abrieron un panorama enorme que me llevó a plantearme nuevos gustos y preferencias. Así llegué a quien tal vez es para mí, el mejor de los compositores de música para cine: Ennio Morricone. Razones hay muchas, discutía en algún momento con un gran amigo el porqué le prefiero encima de compositores como John Williams cuyo corte es totalmente épico, no demerito su gran capacidad, sin embargo creo que una persona que es capaz de pensar en el personaje antes que en el gran acontecimiento, que le da vida al factor actoral y que piensa en apoyar al perfil y concepto protagónico es de mucho más valor que alguien que ensalza una situación que argumentalmente tiene menos peso y debe recurrir a un soporte auditivo. Porque aunque el cine presenta un juego de equilibrios (igual que la figura japonesa mencionada), ninguno debe jamás estar por encima de la narrativa, por lo menos en lo personal, como regla inquebrantable.
En la película La Misión, producida por Roland Joffé (cuya afición por Morricone le ha convertido en su compositor de cabecera) film de culto para los aficionados a la música para cine, Morricone realiza un impresionante proceso de definición de Leitmotiv (pieza auditiva ligada invariablemente con el protagonista, proceso del que en su tiempo Wagner fue precursor) con una pieza conocida como “Gabriel’s Oboe”, una pieza muy dulce y que además de una línea melódica muy digerible que posee una de las características más importantes de Morricone: un proceso neto de “tropicalización” (es un término acuñado por la Mercadotecnia que trata la adaptación de un producto a las condiciones locales) de la melodía, la búsqueda etnográfica para adaptar la música netamente europea al entorno que se mostrará, exactamente igual que el proceso de colonización y evangelización. Fue expreso para la película el uso de fragmentos corales acompañados por percusiones (América Latina y su música autóctona estaba fuertemente fundamentada por tambores e instrumentos de no más de 3 notas), se compuso un Ave María coral cantada en Guaraní, una pieza para un infante indígena, y lo que es más importante, ninguna de las piezas supera el proceso narrativo de las acciones.
Morricone nunca ha ganado un Oscar por alguna de las películas para las que compuso la música. Sin embargo ha sido galardonado con un premio a la trayectoria por la Academia (que finalmente importa lo mismo que el alza en los precios del charal en el territorio nacional, o sea, nada) y que finalmente ha desencadenado una serie de comentarios acerca de la lucidez, a últimas fechas, del compositor. Que si contrata a instrumentistas para que compongan en su lugar, que si está muy viejo. Por lo menos considero que un personaje como estos, muestra su más grande respeto a una historia de la que se considera partícipe con la más profunda de las modestias, inclusive detrás de su figura taciturna e impávida frente a su orquesta no deja de ser el monstruo que construye y crea las piezas, nuevamente a mi consideración, más hermosas que el cine ha escuchado.
